Soft enamel has a textured surface
In a soft enamel pin, enamel color sits below the raised metal borders. The relief can be felt when the surface is touched. This process is useful when the buyer wants visible metal outlines, strong color separation and a dimensional appearance.
Hard enamel has a smooth polished surface
Hard enamel color is filled and polished level with the metal lines. The finished pin feels smooth and has a more uniform reflective surface. It is often selected for corporate programs, premium collections and projects where a polished presentation is the priority.
Side-by-side buying comparison
| Decision | Soft enamel | Hard enamel |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Raised metal with recessed color | Smooth, polished and level |
| Visual effect | More texture and relief contrast | Cleaner, flatter presentation |
| Best fit | Events, merchandise, clubs and promotional pins | Corporate, premium retail and collectible pins |
| Artwork | Clear metal borders between colors | Clear color areas suitable for polishing |
Material, size and finish planning
Zinc alloy is a common choice for custom shapes and dimensional details. A 40 mm pin is a useful reference size, but wearable products should be balanced for weight and attachment strength. Gold-tone and silver-tone plating, digital print details, raised metal and recessed areas can be reviewed during artwork preparation.
MOQ and production schedule
The typical starting MOQ is 100 pieces per design and can change with the process. A sample normally takes about 7 days after artwork confirmation. Bulk production normally takes about 15 days after sample approval. More complex shapes, color work or packing can affect timing.
Which process should you choose?
Choose soft enamel when tactile relief and visible metal outlines support the design. Choose hard enamel when a smooth polished surface matters more. Send a PSD, PDF or available artwork file if you are unsure; the design can be reviewed before a process is recommended.
